A 2-day skills-based workshop guiding learners to explore their attitudes about suicide, to start conversations and ask about suicide, to listen rather than advise or minimize, and to work with someone having suicide thoughts in developing an effective safeplan. Learners practice intervention skills within the workshop. For ASIST workshops I will need to partner with a co-trainer, since 2 trainers are always required in this program. If you have any currently active ASIST trainers at your location, I can co-train with one of them, and if not, we can explore trainers in your general area or we could bring in a co-trainer with whom I have worked in the past. Maximum size for ASIST is 30 learners per workshop.
A 4-hour workshop in which learners are introduced to basic suicide alertness skills and practice those skills. This involves learning how to begin an intervention and escort someone with suicide thoughts to a skilled provider while keeping the person with suicide thoughts safe during the process. I can deliver 2 identical workshops the same day if we can start the first workshop no later than 0800. As in ASIST, the maximum size is 30 learners in each safeTALK workshop. An onsite local “Support Resource” trained in suicide intervention is required to be present during the workshop.
An intensive 2-day course to qualify up to 10 people at your organization or location to become safeTALK trainers and present the course themselves to your population after I depart. The T4T requires coordination and contracting with LivingWorks Education, which owns the program. Contact me for more information on how to contract a T4T with LivingWorks Education. I can be your T4T coach if I help you with the initial contact and you request me.
Cost is determined by LivingWorks Education, and for this training option I would act as a subcontractor paid by LivingWorks.
A 1-day (7-8 hours) interactive workshop on basic Solution-Oriented Counseling Skills, with built-in practice time to get started using this modality for crisis intervention and short-term counseling. I’ve used this modality at least hundreds of times as a military chaplain and designed this 1-day course while I was an adjunct instructor at the USAF Chaplain Corps College.
A 2-hour workshop exploring causes of caregiver burnout, including vicarious trauma and other factors. Interactive discussion with other learners during the workshop provides opportunities to share effective coping strategies.
Keep checking the MH Life Consulting website. When we offer open training workshops, we will publicize them, along with the cost per person. Most open workshops will be offered in the DMV region (DC-Maryland-Virginia [Northern Virginia])
Although I have completed well over 4000 face-to-face counseling contact hours during my 33 years of active duty service and have achieved Clinical Fellow status with the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy I do not offer counseling or therapy services in my current work through MH Life Consulting. However, I can suggest possible referral resources for support as needed.
